So what do you grab when your stomach is rumbling? A bag of potato chips? Cheetos? Microwaved popcorn? Oreos? Snickers? Honeybuns and a swig of soda?
Snacking should be a part of a Queen’s balanced diet, however, it is important to know that snacks are not just about quieting the belly beast, but providing real nutrients to your body. These nutrients give you energy and keep your brain active – building and strengthening bones, muscles, and tendons – not to mention making your skin, hair and nails beautiful.
Establishing healthy snacking habits as a teen will benefit you with good lifelong health and even protect you from disease.
Snacking allows for the daily mental, physical and spiritual growth that every Queen strives for.
Although junk food can certainly fill you up, these are not what I like to think of as “Royal Selections” – positive choices that help you toward excellence in everything you do.
Instead of reaching for highly-processed treats, here are 8 healthy ways to love your body, and nourish your spirit and soul . . .
1. A handful of trail mix
Tip: Look for pure dried fruit, seed, and nut varieties. Ditch the types with candy or chocolate chips added.
2. A cup of vanilla or plain yogurt with a piece of fresh fruit or berries.
3. A hard boiled egg with fresh veggies (cut up carrot, cucumber, bell pepper, cauliflower, broccoli or tomatoes are all tasty choices).
4. Carrot sticks, sliced cucumber, or cherry tomatoes with:
Guacamole or Quickie Queen Avocado Dip: mashed avocado, a little lemon juice, with a pinch of salt
A few small cubes of cheese
Dairy Queen Straight Talk: I love cheese, but ladies, steer away from the Queso and Velveeta. Look for hard cheese varieties with less unhealthy additives. Remember, milk is white . . . If your cheese is orange it has added dyes or coloring!
5. Crackers or baked tortilla chips with fresh salsa, guacamole or a few small slices of cheese.
Tip: When choosing tortilla chips look for the plain “baked” varieties for a healthier twist than fried.
6. The Royal PB Half Sandwich:
1 piece whole wheat or whole-grain bread topped with peanut or almond butter and a drizzle of honey.
7. Ladybugs on Log:
Celery sticks topped with protein-packed peanut butter and sweetened with raisins.
8. A Queen Bee Berry Blast Smoothie:
1 fist-sized portion of frozen mixed berries
1 cup of milk or milk substitute (soy, almond or coconut milk)
6 ounces of yogurt (that’s a bit more than ½ a cup)
1 cup of ice
A squeeze of honey
Extra credit: I gave this challenge last month and some of you tried it! This might sound totally gross, but trust me on this one. Try throwing in a handful of spinach. You’ll never taste it. Spinach is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, some which are difficult to find in other foods. Your skin, hair, and heart will all thank you for it!
